Our Sustainability Promise
We recognise the influence and impact that our business has on the environment and the communities in which we operate. We are committed to sustainability and to minimising our environmental footprint, while enhancing the wellbeing of our guests, employees and local communities. We are supported in this journey by our sustainability accreditation partner, Green Tourism.
Supporting Our Community
At Cairn Edinburgh, we are committed to sustainability and giving back to our community. Our gardens are designed to support local wildlife, featuring plants that encourage smaller birds to nest and attract pollinators, alongside a herb garden with wildflowers, a bug hotel, a bee hotel with bee cups, and hanging baskets to support bees. Beyond our green spaces, we take pride in helping with local litter picks, donating to the local food bank, and supporting Room to Reward, which recognizes the invaluable contributions of volunteers and community heroes. These initiatives reflect our dedication to creating a positive impact both locally and globally.
Environmental Initiatives
Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. We serve coffee in sustainable packaging and promote local eateries that are vegan-friendly or source local produce. Our supplier, Brakes, follows a strict ethical code of conduct, and we offer alternative breakfast options to accommodate religious and dietary requirements. Our commitment to reducing waste includes replacing single-use shampoo and conditioner.
Food waste is composted, and we monitor monthly gas, electricity, and water consumption as part of our group-wide carbon management policy. Energy efficiency is a priority, with LED lighting throughout, motion sensors in corridors, climate-controlled boilers, and thermostatic radiators. Our key cards are made from recycled wood, and our buildings are well-insulated, with all pipes lagged to improve efficiency.
Our Team
At Cairn Edinburgh, we are committed to providing a safe, healthy, and sustainable workplace for all team members. As Gold Members of the Mental Health Charter, we prioritise wellbeing by offering access to a mental health app and dedicated policies for mental health, wellbeing, and menopause support. To promote sustainable commuting, we run a cycle-to-work scheme and utilise EV vehicles for company operations. Sustainability is a key focus, with an on-site Sustainability Champion and regular training for all staff to ensure best practices. Our progress is monitored through monthly energy and activity reports to head office, reinforcing our dedication to continuous improvement and environmental responsibility.
Guest Support
Our guests play a critical role in promoting sustainability in our hotel. By making conscious choices during their stay, such as reducing energy and water usage, properly disposing of waste, and using eco-friendly products, guests can help minimise the environmental impact of their stay.
We provide details on local public transport, including bus and train routes, on our website to make getting around easy and eco-friendly. We also provide local attractions on our website, such as Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, Palace of Holyrood. Promote local attractions including Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, Palace of Holyrood. Guests can also access a local walking guide for exploring the area. For guests with electric cars, there are four EV charging points at the nearby Ferrytoll car park.
Your Feedback
We value guest feedback and input in driving innovative ideas to reduce the environmental impact of our hotel. We encourage our guests to send feedback to each venue, sharing their ideas and suggestions for reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting sustainable practices. By working together with our guests, we can continue to build a sustainability program that provides guests with the flexibility and freedom to stay in a way that aligns with their values and preferences, while also contributing to a more sustainable future.
